Turner Construction Wins Associated General Contractors of America’s Alliant Build America Award for Best Construction Management of a Project

Kansas City’s LIVESTRONG Sporting Park is one of the most significant construction projects of 2011, the Associated General Contractors of America announced. As a result, the project’s contractor, Turner Construction, was one of 16 firms to receive the association’s Alliant Build America Award.

“These projects demonstrate the qualities that have made the construction industry great: hard work, ingenuity and world-class skill,” said Kristine Young, the association’s president and the CEO of Des Moines, Iowa-based Miller the Driller.  “Contractors like these are not only building exceptional projects, they’re building a better, more prosperous America.”

Home of the Sporting Kansas City Soccer Club, LIVESTRONG Sporting Park was designed around two key elements: architectural metal fins, which represents the movement of the players on the field; and the roof canopy, which represents the ball, covers every stadium seat and  allows sunlight through for turf growth.  The intense construction schedule – reduced from 22 to 16 months – required Turner to carefully coordinate with subcontractors and designers.  Turner completed the project within budget, all while working six and seven days a week often around the clock, not affecting the adjacent active entertainment and retail district, with an extremely safe site and recycling nearly all construction waste.  The 342,000 square-foot space was constructed in time for the Sporting KC to play in the new stadium during the 2011 season.

The Alliant Build America Awards recognize the nation’s most significant construction projects.  A panel of judges, representing all areas of construction, evaluated a record number of submissions this year, assessing each project’s complexity, use of innovative construction techniques and coordination with partners, among other criteria.  The awards, which were announced during the association’s annual convention in Honolulu, are considered by many to be the most prestigious recognition of construction accomplishments in the U.S.
