Toronto Community Housing - 389 Church St. Modernization

Toronto Community Housing's Church and Granby Streets Property Undergoes Extensive Modernization

The project involves the modernization of a 13-storey property owned by the Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) at the Church and Granby Streets intersection. This non-profit entity provides housing and social support. The existing building, with 12 above-ground levels, a penthouse, and underground parking, underwent a complete interior renovation, including the removal of existing finishes, partitions, lighting, and mechanical systems. New elements include a concrete elevator shaft, interior partitions, finishes, and updated mechanical and electrical systems, which required extensive concrete cutting and reinforcement with carbon fiber strips. Exterior work involved strengthening the walls with a steel stud system, restoring the brick facade with custom-sized bricks, and replacing parts of the roof.

On February 4, 2021, Toronto Mayor John Tory officially opened this permanent, affordable and supportive rental housing building. The building provides a safe, inclusive and supportive community for Indigenous and non-Indigenous women, gender diverse people, and youth and senior women who have experienced or who are at risk of experiencing homelessness.

The building was redeveloped by Toronto Community Housing and is leased to and managed by YWCA Toronto.

Services include housing stabilization, harm reduction, health promotion, and increased access to primary health care and acute mental health services. The building includes a pottery studio, as well programs that focus on celebrating the Indigenous cultural heritage of residents.
