Developed by Wexford Science + Technology, Ventas, and the University of Pittsburgh, the eight-story site called The Assembly encourages collaboration between researchers and entrepreneurs to advance their discoveries into patient treatment for areas such as transplantation, cancer, and immunology.
The design for this facility has sensitively restored and preserved the original character of the 207,000 sq. ft., eight-story Ford Motor Building while establishing a distinct, yet architecturally respectful 157,170 sq. ft. laboratory-tower addition and 325-car parking facility. Clad in precast terracotta, the new addition complements, but does not copy, the materiality of the Ford Motor Building. The design inserts a green terrace between the Ford Motor Building and the new tower to further demarcate the old and new structures.
The facility includes state-of-the-art lab space for researchers, a variety of conference rooms along with flexible lounge areas to spur collaboration, three retail storefronts, a tiered parking garage with secured bike parking room, an auditorium with 250+ seat capacity for lectures, presentations and symposiums, a multipurpose atrium and event space, and galleries throughout to highlight the building’s rich heritage. The building also includes a prefabricated penthouse, which consists of 34 sections that average 14’ high and 48’ long.
