Purdue University Hobart & Russell Creighton Hall of Animal Sciences

Enhancing Animal Studies at Creighton Hall

The Creighton Hall of Animal Sciences is a transformative environment to encourage collaboration and engagement among peers with diverse interests. The new facility consolidates the Animal Sciences program into a cohesive complex, divided into two distinct sections: a three-story teaching and research laboratory wing (Creighton Hall) and a two-story animal studies wing (Land O’ Lakes Center).

The animal studies wing features a 6,800 sq. ft. arena for classes and show events involving large agricultural animals – cattle, sheep, pigs, etc., and telescoping bleachers with a capacity for 200 people. Additional features include a large animal holding room, a meat processing abattoir, two meat-cutting classrooms, two sample labs, a smokehouse and packaging suite, a research kitchen, and a public retail shop. The entire second level of the wing is dedicated to MEP support of the facility, with the AHUs located in the basement of the adjacent lab wing.

Problem solving through mock-ups

During the arena's planning, the University expressed concern regarding the texture of the concrete floor and the slipping potential for both animals and humans. Understanding the critical nature of this floor, the Turner team worked with our concrete subcontractor to test eight different texture mock-ups. Through this process, Turner achieved a finish that met the university’s expectations. After achieving the desired finish, we re-sequenced work to ensure concrete would be poured undercover and during optimum weather.
