Turner provided construction services for the renovation of 3501 Market Street, a historically significant four-story steel and concrete building, designed by Venturi, Scott Brown Associates, into Drexel University’s new URBN Center. Concurrently, Turner adapted the attached 3401 Filbert Street building into the URBN Center Annex. The total project encompasses 145,917 sq. ft. of renovation and is the home of the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design. The URBN project houses art studios, classrooms, offices for the dean and faculty, an art gallery, a black box theater, and screening rooms. Significant features of the construction include the preservation and protection of existing mural artwork, the installation of a new multi-story atrium in 3501 Market Street, and the infill of a one-story high courtyard in 3401 Filbert Street.
The iconic 3501 Market Street building was originally designed by renown architect Robert Venturi. Drexel University transformed the building into a new home for arts education. The result was a designed hailed by architecture critic Inga Saffron in The Philadelphia Inquirer as "one of Philadelphia's most thrilling new designs."
