Turner provided construction management services to build Columbia University's Northwest Corner Building, a 14-story, 188,000 sq. ft. research environment located at Broadway and 120th Street. Of the project's unique features is its 126 foot-long clear span over a gymnasium. To execute the over-build, the project team installed three parallel trusses in the lower part of the building thereby distributing the load of the library, laboratories, classrooms and office. In addition, supporting columns were installed in a manner to flank but not penetrate gymnasium floor. The building is devoted to wet laboratory research and connects to Chandler Hall (Chemistry) and Pupin Hall (Physics). The laboratories house highly technical research facilities in the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and their derivatives. Other components include a library, classrooms, café, bridge connections and mechanical space.
