The long-awaited 440,000 sq. ft. full-service replacement hospital, the White Oak Medical Center, for Adventist Healthcare opened in 2019 after serving patients in its original location in Takoma Park in Washington D.C. since 1907.
The hospital was first operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church and continues to operate today as a non-profit faith-based organization. The White Oak Medical Center includes 180 private inpatient medical surgical rooms, Emergency Department with a Fast Track area, a full-service lab and pharmacy, a specialized wound care area, and a comprehensive radiology suite.
The hospital itself was originally designed and built for “future expansion” on top of the 5th floor with additional load capacity, however, Turner was brought on not even 4 months after completion of the hospital to start the vertical expansion core and shell for the 6th and 7th floors. While construction was underway on the overbuild, the Owner made the decision to add an 8th floor as well, which was also completed safely while the rest of the newly opened hospital continued their active operations with the operating rooms on the 2nd floor.
The construction details included a structural concrete frame, prefabricated exterior wall framing supporting masonry and phenolic resin panels, curtinwall, a membrane roof as well as a green roof area, twelve elevators, a two level main lobby with ornamental stair, and a patio and walkways overlooking a lake.
