Day on the Hill at Prairie View A&M

Day on the Hill at Prairie View A&M

In our shared commitment to create strong, inclusive pathways in our industry, Turner participated in a Turner Day on the Hill at Prairie View A&M University in Texas for a full day of student professional development.

The day consisted of a meet and greet, resume reviews, mock interviews, headshots, and a discussion with Prairie Views’ President, Dr. Ruth Simmons, who was the First Black President of an Ivy League University.

Organized and lead by our own Trevon Heath, Procurement Agent from our Houston office, the team hosted a panel discussion called “Real Talk with Turner.” This informal conversation with students included topics such as professionalism, cultural differences, how to effectively engage with people from different backgrounds, addressing stereotypes, and positive and negative trends from historically black college and university (HBCU) recruits.

“The Real Talk with Turner discussion gave us an opportunity to meet HBCU students where they are. We structured the conversation in a way that kept their attention to better prepare them for what is to come in their respective careers,” said Trevon. "We wanted this day to be about expanding opportunities for diverse students as well as bridging a gap between the construction industry and our future leaders of tomorrow.”

The Turner Day on the Hill is the first of 16 events that will be rolled out over the next year and is one part of a growing partnership with Prairie View A&M. The partnership also includes a scholarship and grants program which has provided three Prairie View students $17,500 in tuition assistance. The remaining funds will provide additional financial resources and support for STEM related student organizations, capstone projects, and student competitions.

“I am so proud of what our team has accomplished and the impact they have made on these incredible students. This has become the standard of standards,” said Charles Stewart, Vice President, Diverse Recruiting and Outreach. “The bar is set and I’m so blessed to have been able to be a part of this process. Job well done and hats off to the entire Houston business unit!”

“The success of Turner Day on the Hill is attributed to our team who dedicated their time going beyond brick and mortar to support these students.” Trevon continued, “Our team in Houston along with members from Moody Nolan are the real MVP’s! Thank you all for helping to execute the dream!”

Special thanks to the team members who played a vital role in the day's success.
