NYU Langone Medical Center, Helen L. & Martin S. Kimmel Pavilion

project at a glance

The Kimmel Pavilion is the culmination of more than a decade of planning and reflects the team’s commitment to construction excellence. The 830,000 square foot 21-story facility includes the Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital, a 160,000 square foot facility. Two of the challenges the team overcame were recovering from Super Storm Sandy, and constructing directly above active Amtrak tunnels and a sewer outflow.

Kimmel also marked numerous firsts for New York City: first hospital to provide private rooms for all patients and the first building to implement a flood resiliency program. As well, Kimmel was the first hospital in New York to adopt a modular approach to design using prefabricated bathroom pods throughout. The decision to prefabricate the bathrooms allowed for the “same-handed” design of the rooms; a design that is proven to reduce medical errors.
