This 39,000 square foot performing arts center is a design/build project and an initiative by the City of Camrose, Camrose County, the Government of Alberta and the University of Alberta. The center features a 550-seat theatre with gallery areas on the first and second floors. Local art exhibits are also showcased in the centre’s lobby.

The seating area features two sloped levels overlooking a 2,700 square foot stage. There are box seats next to the orchestra section and adjacent to the second level of seating. The facility also has a multi-purpose room with 200 seats and is used for meetings, wedding receptions and other events. Finishes including polished concrete floors, wood panels in the theatre and the galleries, and LED pot lights to create a stylish atmosphere.

Sustainability is a key factor for the center, with initiatives that fall within Green Globes certification parameters. This building includes condensing boilers, an upgraded building envelope and high-efficiency chillers. It is one of the few facilities in Canada that fully incorporates LED lighting, including the audience chamber, the front and back of the house, to manage energy effectively.

The Camrose Performing Arts Centre has the distinction of being Canada’s largest facility to integrate solar photovoltaic (PV) technology into the construction. A unique part of this facility is the fly tower, which is clad with 488 solar PV modules. This generates 122 DC kilowatts that convert to AC through the inverter systems.  During the day, the solar PV array generates electricity for the building, and any excess electricity goes back to the grid.

The centre also includes back of house facilities, a green room, administration offices. It is concrete and structural steel building with exterior finishes that include metal panels, masonry and full height glazing.
