Des Moines Area Community College

Supporting the Needs of Central Iowa’s Largest Community College

Since beginning in 1966 as a vocational and technical learning center in the Des Moines metro, Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) has become Iowa's largest and most diverse community college. DMACC spent the rest of the 1960s into the 1970s establishing its main campus in Ankeny and starting to expand, leading to a second campus founded in Boone in 1969. In that time, the courses, locations, technologies and facilities have all changed, yet DMACC has remained true to its founding purpose to maintain relationships that continue to help connect students of all ages, backgrounds, interests and abilities with the life-improving power of education.

As part of a campus initiative to improve and upgrade mechanical capabilities and efficiencies, Turner served as the construction manager to support DMACC’s commitment to evolve and meet the ongoing needs of its students.

The projects included renovations and HVAC upgrades in three buildings, including new Air Handling Units and Energy Recovery Ventilators, new ductwork, hydronic piping, controls, and corresponding architectural work.  The team also completed structural modifications that were required in each building to accommodate for the new equipment loads on the building structure. On the Boone campus, Turner completed repair and replacement of a failing structural wall and addition of new classroom walls.

The project team performed detailed coordination with the facility staff to minimize impacts to the student experience and allow for the facilities to remain open for operation.
