Butler University Hinkle Fieldhouse Historic Restoration

Preserving the National Cathedral of Basketball

Known as “the national cathedral of basketball”, Hinkle Fieldhouse is one of the nation’s greatest sports arenas. For over eight decades it has been a beloved institution on campus. Butler University undertook this project to preserve Hinkle and provide an even better experience for visitors and the student-athletes who train, play, and learn in this historic facility.

One of the preservation highlights was the conversion of the long unused natatorium on Hinkle’s west side into the Athletic Department Administrative Suite, which includes three, 6,000 sq. ft. levels of new classrooms, training facilities, offices, and a new weight room. This allowed the development of additional space to expand the women’s and men’s student-athlete facilities, widen concourses, increase the hospitality suite, and expand restrooms and concession areas.

Additional upgrades on the interior included new seating and the installation of a new scoreboard in the bowl, fan-experience graphics throughout, and life safety improvements including a new elevator, MEP upgrades and a fire suppression system.

The Hinkle Fieldhouse Historic Restoration project earned the Indiana Landmarks, "Cook Cup for Outstanding Restoration" and the Monumental Affair, "Monumental Award".
