University of Chicago - David Rubenstein Forum

Designed with Interaction and Community in Mind

The forum was designed with interaction and community in mind. The space houses scholarly meetings and interactive workshops, with each "stack" offering varying formal and informal spaces that converge with a central social lounge. The stacked look of the structure is a post-tension design where every floor is non-typical. The exterior is primarily zinc and glass offering a 360-degree view outside. It was important to the University of Chicago and DS+R that from the exterior, that no one felt their view was looking at the backside of the building. The interior space includes the main lobby, restaurant, and stairs leading to the building’s largest multipurpose event space capable of accommodating up to 600 people with a 285-seat auditorium directly above it.
