Working within an active hospital, Turner completed the gut and fit of a full floor pediatric and medical surgery suite at South Shore University Hospital. Constructed on behalf of Northwell Health, the 13,500 sq. ft. suite is one of multiple projects that Turner is completing at South Shore University Hospital. To support these new areas, extensive infrastructure upgrades were completed, along with the installation of AHUs, a chiller and modular boiler. From the onset, Turner faced many challenges. For example, the pediatric and medical surgery suite, located on the 4th floor, sits directly above an active catheterization laboratory. As a result, construction activities were planned around patient surgeries. The project team also implemented an ICRA compliant IAQ program. The building's nine-foot deck height also presented the team with some challenges. Since the ceiling was eight-feet high, it gave the team only one-foot of clearance to install critical MEPs. To overcome this constraint, the team, in conjunction with the project's engineer, devised an approach that facilitated installation of these systems. Ultimately, the team was able to expedite the project, turning over the pediatric and medical surgery suite ahead of schedule.
