Using AI to Advance Turner’s Commitment to Safety

SafeT Coach is an AI-powered safety assistant designed to strengthen proactive safety behaviors during pre-task planning, morning huddles, and wherever the work is happening.

Built to Support Proactive Safety
SafeT Coach is trained on Turner’s EH&S policy framework and designed to deliver timely, practical, and compliant guidance. More importantly, it encourages proactive safety behaviors that Building L.I.F.E. —Living Injury-Free Every day— promotes: planning the work, recognizing hazards early, and intervening before someone gets hurt. SafeT Coach supports construction personnel of all levels as they coach safe behaviors, while enabling trade workers to quickly access accurate information when they need it most. It is an accessible tool to help guide safety decisions.

SafeT Coach functions as a virtual safety consultant available 24/7. Users can ask plain-language safety questions and receive clear, actionable responses aligned with Turner's Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) requirements. Example questions include:

“I’m reviewing a pre-task plan for excavation and trenching. What key safety controls should I be checking for?”

“What are best practices for confined space entry?”

By making safety guidance easy to access, SafeT Coach supports teams of all experience levels and builds confidence to speak up, ask questions, and care for one another.

Identify Hazards Instantly—Using Field Photos

SafeT Coach analyzes photos taken in the field. Simply upload an image from a jobsite, and SafeT Coach will:

  • Summarize what it sees
  • Generate a Potential Hazard Identification Table (including risk levels, recommended controls, and policy references)
  • Get targeted coaching prompts to engage workers in real time, right at the point of work.
This enables immediate intervention—helping crews pause work, address unsafe conditions, and protect each other before incidents occur. It supports the Building L.I.F.E. mindset of recognizing risk early, speaking up, and stepping in when something doesn’t look right.

From Photo to Action: AI-Driven Safety in the Field

During her first week using SafeT Coach, Megan, a junior project engineer, snapped a photo of an active work area and asked the tool to analyze potential safety risks.

Within seconds, SafeT Coach flagged a critical issue: large excavation equipment operating too close to a pedestrian walkway.

Megan immediately brought the insight to the site superintendent, and together they engaged the trade partner. The result was swift action — the equipment was relocated closer to the site exit and further away from the pedestrian path prior to removal.

What could have gone unnoticed became a proactive safety correction. One photo. One prompt. A safer site.

When Experience Meets the Right Prompt: Rethinking Ladder Safety

Brandon, a Safety Director with over 20 years of experience, reviewed an incident in which an electrician fell from a ladder less than four feet high after a zip tie failed, resulting in a broken wrist. Based on long-standing guidance, Brandon initially believed fall protection was not required at that height.

To confirm, he checked the standard using SafeT Coach. It affirmed the familiar four-foot threshold—then prompted a deeper question: But what if the worker cannot maintain three points of contact?

That prompt surfaced a critical clarification. When three points of contact can’t be maintained, fall protection or an alternative means of access is required regardless of height. Brandon realized his original assumption was incomplete and updated field expectations to reflect how the work is actually performed, not just how the rule is commonly interpreted.

This is where SafeT Coach adds value: challenging assumptions, guiding better questions, and helping experienced professionals make safer decisions in real-world conditions.

From Question to Confidence: Safety Empowerment in the Field

Nhi, an intern with no prior safety experience, noticed a fireproofing crew member working without a mask.

Unsure whether respiratory protection was required for fireproofing work, Nhi turned to SafeT Coach to validate her concern. The tool confirmed that a mask was required for the task.

With that clarity, Nhi took the next step herself. She connected with the safety team to obtain the appropriate mask and brought it directly to the trade partner so the work could continue safely.

What started as a question became a moment of confidence. SafeT Coach didn’t just provide an answer — it empowered a new team member to take meaningful safety action in the field.
