Turner Provides AI-Powered Safety Tool to the Construction Industry

SafeT Coach, powered by Turner, is available industrywide at no cost.

Turner is making SafeT Coach, its AI-powered field safety tool, available free of charge to the broader construction industry. The announcement comes during Turner's 22nd annual Safety Week and company-wide Safety Stand-Down, it's largest to date, under the theme "All In Together."

In construction, conditions change frequently, and the traditional safety resources that establish standards—manuals, scheduled training, retrospective reporting—are not always accessible when and where field teams need them most. SafeT Coach was developed to close that gap.

Accessible from any mobile device on the jobsite, SafeT Coach answers plain-language safety questions with responses grounded in Turner’s Environmental Health & Safety standards—not generic internet sources. It can also evaluate uploaded jobsite photos to identify potential hazards, prioritize risk, and recommend controls in real time. Based on those hazards, users are provided with coaching prompts to support clear, actionable conversations in the field when and where work is happening.

The tool is designed to support a coaching approach, enabling supervisors and craft professionals to engage in real-time discussions about safer ways to perform work—focused on learning and improvement, not enforcement. Outputs are framed as potential hazards and are designed to support professional judgment.

SafeT Coach emerged from Turner’s AI Innovation Challenge and was advanced through a collaborative design sprint and field pilots with more than 80 stakeholders. The tool was further validated through extended jobsite use and independent external review by a risk partner prior to public release.

The tool is already proving its value in the field. Darren Dreas, a superintendent for Turner on a higher-education lab, used SafeT Coach to determine whether a vertical shaft qualified as a permit-required confined space. The tool produced a decision flow chart, a start-of-day permit checklist, and policy citations—enabling an informed conversation with the trade partner’s safety manager within minutes. “Using SafeT Coach saved hours of research and analysis, helping us to quickly make informed decisions,” Dreas said.

Stacey Darrohn, Senior Project EH&S Manager at Turner, has applied SafeT Coach across a different set of workflows: reviewing trade partner safety submittals, framing responses to safety observations for morning announcements, and generating jobsite signage. “It’s been a huge time saver,” Darrohn said.

Since its initial pilot, SafeT Coach has logged more than 25,000 interactions across Turner staff, trade partners, and field teams. The tool was built to support the approximately 150,000 workers across 40,000 companies engaged on Turner projects and is now available to the broader construction industry.

“Nothing we build will ever be as important as the people who build it,” said Steve Spaulding, Turner’s Chief Environmental, Health, and Safety Officer. “SafeT Coach shortens the distance between uncertainty and action—so when someone in the field has a question, the answer is already in their hands.”

By opening SafeT Coach to the industry, Turner is working to put more informed safety decisions in the hands of more people, helping protect the more than eight million workers on construction jobsites across the United States. This commitment to shared responsibility is reflected in Turner’s 2026 Safety Week, which runs May 4–8.

Safety Week reflects Turner's culture of Active Caring. Throughout the week, Turner employees, trade partners, and clients will participate in daily toolbox talks covering hazard recognition, fall prevention, emergency response, and mental health. May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, and Turner teams will take time to reinforce their commitment to supporting the physical and mental well-being of people.
