Turner-PCL joint venture team managing LAX project recently celebrates breaking ground

Turner-PCL joint venture team managing LAX project recently celebrates breaking ground

The Turner-PCL joint venture team managing the Midfield Satellite Concourse project at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) recently celebrated breaking ground on the five-level, 750,000-square-foot expansion.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti expressed excitement about the project as a job creator, as well as an enhanced conduit for tourism. “LAX means so much to L.A.’s economy,” he said, noting that the airport employs more than 50,000 people, and that a record 47.3 million tourists visited last year. “That’s why we’re investing billions to make it one of the premier airports in the world,” he added. “The Midfield Satellite Concourse is a transformational project that will put thousands of people to work and help extend L.A.’s worldwide reach even further.”

The facility enhances the passenger experience, adding 12 gates, a redeveloped guest entrance, L.A.-centric food, beverage, and retail offerings, airline club spaces, a new baggage handling system, and a 1,000-foot, underground pedestrian bridge with moving walkways to connect the Midfield Concourse to the nearby Tom Bradley International Terminal. It also adds much-needed airside infrastructure such as additional taxilanes, taxiways, apron, and utilities, and space for future technology and security upgrades, to one of the nation’s busiest airports.

"LAX is quickly becoming the airport that Angelenos demand and deserve," added Los Angeles City Councilmember Mike Bonin, whose district includes the airport. "I am especially excited that the Midfield Satellite Concourse will incorporate a number of sustainability features, such as using passive daylight lighting for the interior spaces, water-saving plumbing fixtures and a cool roof that reduces heat absorption. These ecofriendly features will go a long way to minimizing the environmental impact of this needed new facility, and making LAX a world-class airport that is also a first-class neighbor."

The Midfield Satellite Concourse is seeking LEED Silver certification as well as CAL Green Tier 1 certification. It is scheduled for completion in the end of 2019.
