Turner, in partnership with Barton Malow and Dixon, celebrated the topping out of Henry Ford Health’s new patient tower, marking a significant milestone in the Destination: Grand development transforming Henry Ford Hospital’s historic campus in Detroit’s New Center neighborhood.
Hundreds of project team members, partners, and supporters gathered to watch a 32-foot, 1,400-pound steel beam lifted into place atop the 20-story structure, signifying the completion of vertical steel construction for the new tower.
The new patient tower is the centerpiece of Destination: Grand, the $2.2 billion program reimagining the 111-year-old hospital campus and advancing the future of healthcare in Detroit.
“This milestone reflects the incredible collaboration, dedication, and craftsmanship of everyone involved in bringing this transformative healthcare project to life,” said Kirsten Deenik, Turner. “We are proud to partner with Henry Ford Health, Barton Malow, Dixon, and the entire project team to deliver a world-class facility that will serve Detroit and surrounding communities for generations to come.”
Since breaking ground in September 2024, crews have installed approximately 6,800 tons of structural steel and logged more than 600,000 cumulative work hours.
“This steel beam symbolizes the strength of our commitment to the city we’ve called home for more than a century,” said Bob Riney, President and CEO, Henry Ford Health. “This milestone moment brings us one step closer to opening the hospital of the future, where people from Detroit and around the world will have access to the very best in medical breakthroughs, technology, treatment, and healing environments, regardless of where they live or their socio-economic status.”
The 1.2-million-square-foot expansion will include 432 private patient rooms equipped with advanced interactive smart technology, specialized intensive care units, and 28 advanced operating suites designed for complex surgical procedures. The hospital’s new 75,000-square-foot emergency department will include 100 private treatment spaces, fast-track care areas, and dedicated behavioral health emergency services.
