Coolidge Senior High School

Built originally in the late 1930s, the Calvin Coolidge High School was given its name from the only president at the time without a school named after him, Calvin Coolidge. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Ward 4 of Washington DC originally built in the modern Georgian style over three stories. To overcome declining enrollment and changing community demographics, the building was converted from a senior high school to a shared educational space for middle and high school students. Each school has its own identity and is separated by advanced security access systems while sharing common spaces such as the cafeteria and auditorium. The reprogramming of the space required a complete interior demolition and abatement of the existing school building to bare structure. This solution allowed the strong neighborhood and alumni support, forged in 80 years of tradition, to continue and has significant community benefit by preserving this historic asset for educational use while creating facilities for common use.

Preserving History: Extensive Restoration Efforts at Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center

Historic preservation efforts were extensive and included the restoration of the façade and cupola, replacing all original windows and distinctive green roof tiles, the recreation of the historic greenhouse, and the interior restoration of the auditorium and historical lobby. Students were moved to modular swing learning spaces on the site to meet faculty and community needs and eliminate concerns of the work happening while students occupied the building.
