University of Houston The RAD

A Revitalized Campus Hub Designed for Connection

Located in the heart of the campus, the existing below-grade student center and food services building was demolished to make way for the new RAD, a central retail, auxiliary and dining destination for the University’s students and staff. The two-story, 41,000 sq. ft. facility includes five food concepts and kitchen spaces on the first floor, administration offices on the second floor, a convenience store, a coffee shop, and a variety of assembly, commons, and presentation/meeting areas throughout. The RAD also features both indoor and outdoor seating, including a second-floor patio, accommodating up to 400 guests.

Sustainable by design – mass timber structure

Sustainable by design – mass timber structure

Certified LEED Silver under the LEED BD+C: New Construction rating system, the project’s sustainability is highlighted by its innovative use of mass timber – the first on the University’s campus. This approach provides both structural and aesthetic benefits while enabling the reuse of 45% of the existing building’s foundation, columns, and beams.
