Clemson University Watt Family Innovation Center

The Watt Family Innovation Center Enables Students to Turn Ideas into Reality

This four-story facility serves as the academic heart of the campus, with classrooms, an auditorium, and adaptable common spaces supported by a robust technology infrastructure to serve the student community. Classes range from general engineering to communication studies and from GIS and 3-D modeling to nursing. The Center takes the traditional academic building that respects the boundaries of disciplines and majors and colleges, and turns it on its head.

Space that allows students to collaborate across university disciplines

The building is designed to be a collaboration space with operational walls that allow rooms to be reconfigured in a matter of hours. The building contains twelve video walls that support 3-D imaging to let students and faculty mirror multiple laptop screens for group viewing and discussion. Walls and windows serve as giant "whiteboards" to be written upon. A "makerspace" allows students to produce 3-D prototypes. The network infrastructure gives project users access to the university's high-performance computing resources. A massive media grid on the front of the building is the largest of its kind in this country. The mesh stretches nearly the entire length of the four-story building and features more than 45,000 chip-on-board, clear-bodied LED nodes.
