The LEED Platinum Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Medical Center was designed and built as a Kaiser Permanente Health Hub, a right-sized medical office space in an environment organized to efficiently accommodate complex care. More than eighty provider offices are located in the four-story building providing both primary and specialty care services to patients. The two-story Reception Area known as the "Public Square" offers comfortable lounge settings with plentiful sunshine through a twenty-five-foot wall of glass and sits on a raised terrazzo floor. Recycled barn siding, limestone, and glass mosaic tile provide warmth, texture, and sparkle that creates a welcoming atmosphere.
Sustainable features include two separate green roofs accessible to staff, and a site design with "Thrive" paths throughout for walking, a yoga lawn, and permanent exercise equipment. The majority of the provider offices are built using DIRTT demountable fabric and glass walls to allow for flexibility.
The Medical Center brought much needed healthcare and wellness services to an under-served community. Designed to engage the community, the building includes an outdoor event space and conference room available for use by local groups. To further support Kaiser Permanente's mission of community engagement, 49% of the construction contracts went to companies owned by diverse businesses and among all newly hired workers, 30% lived within five miles of the construction site.
