Construction Leadership Awards come to Vancouver

Construction Leadership Awards come to Vancouver

B.C.’s builders are enjoying a month in the spotlight as the province rallies to show support and appreciation for the 225,000 skilled tradespeople across B.C. with an official “Construction Month” proclamation.

As part of the local activities this month, Turner Construction Company honoured Westcan Painting & Decorating Ltd. with a Construction Leadership Award for Subcontractor Appreciation for excellence and outstanding deliverables.

“Westcan has been instrumental in the growth of our company in Vancouver. Dennis Reddington and his team have always been there for us and are a solid company that have been reliable and high quality service provider.” Says Amit Patel, Vice President and General Manager of the Vancouver business unit.

With more than 23,500 construction companies in B.C. contributing 8.6% of provincial GDP, the skilled workforce reaches into every community and plays a crucial role in our local economies.

“Construction Month is a chance to raise awareness of the important work done by our skilled workforce” says BCCA President Chris Atchison. “Our industry provides rewarding, challenging careers and it takes a great deal of commitment, skill and experience to succeed. As the construction season kicks into high gear, it feels right to celebrate the people who build our province.”

“It was a great honour to be recognized amongst our peers and fellow subcontractors. We truly appreciate working with Turner Construction and look forward to the many projects they have on the horizon” says Joe Silva who is pictured above and received the award on behalf of Dennis Reddington, Partner of Westcan Painting.

Builders are the stewards of our built environment: B.C.’s construction sector is larger than forestry, mining and fishing industries combined, with projects currently underway valued at more than $75 billion.

Construction is booming in our province yet the industry predicts a shortage of more than 14,000 skilled tradespeople over the next eight (8) years. Only one (1) in 70 B.C. high school graduates currently enter construction trades programs within one year of graduation. We need that to be one (1) in 10 if we’re going to fill the gap created by 57,000 retirements over the next decade.

“We’re proud to participate in Construction Month and especially to recognize local industry leaders” observes Patel. “There are many people leading the way for others in our industry, but their efforts largely go unrecognized.  Builders just tend to get on with it. So it’s great to have this opportunity to stop for a moment and just say “well done – we appreciate you.”
