Interns from Turner’s Somerset office volunteer at Camp Jotoni

Interns from Turner’s Somerset office volunteer at Camp Jotoni

A group of interns from Turner’s office in Somerset, New Jersey, recently participated in a volunteer day doing a number of odd jobs and making repairs at Camp Jotoni, which serves special needs adults and children, and their families.

"The Community Service event at Camp Jotoni showed me that Turner not only values its business, it really cares about helping out the community," said Tim O'Donnell, estimating intern who took part in the day. "The event also brought together all the interns and allowed us to get to know each other outside of the office," he added.

In the course of the day, the team excavated and installed a stone drainage trench to divert water that has caused building damage in the past; cleared and trimmed key pathways between camp areas; repaired ping pong table and air hockey tables, and created a new plunko board game.

Dexter Hendricks, regional director of Community and Citizenship, addressed the volunteer group at the end of the day. “It means a lot to me personally to have you volunteer your time and talent to help those in need,” he said. “From what I’ve seen today you’re really embodying Turner’s core values of teamwork, integrity, and commitment.”

The camp’s director, Josh Burke, was similarly enthusiastic, thanking the group and sharing some broad thoughts. "In the past, volunteer groups have been gracious enough to donate their time and energy in order to expedite our work on some of our more ambitious projects,” he said. “Now that the staff of Turner Construction is generously offering their time and expertise, we are able to expand the scope of our projects to a degree previously unimagined.”

Dexter also added his thanks for the interns’ hard work on their regular assignments throughout the summer. “You have all played an important role during your internship here at Turner and we look forward to further dialogue with each of you in the near future,” he said.
