Turner Breaks Ground on the International African American Museum

Turner Breaks Ground on the International African American Museum

Turner Construction Company is pleased to share that more than 700 people joined the Turner team in the Carolinas to celebrate the groundbreaking of the International African American Museum in downtown Charleston, South Carolina.

This iconic building is situated at Gadsden’s Wharf, a 2.38- acre historic landmark that tells the story of a journey that began more than 300 years ago when enslaved Africans were taken from West Africa to North America.

This 46,500 square foot museum will house a variety of exhibits and art displays that illuminate the voyage of enslaved African Americans, their suffering, and their overall contribution to the greatness of America. The museum will also feature a Center for Family History that will enable visitors to trace their genealogy.

“The Turner team is proud to have a part in bringing this important project to realization,” said Turner’s Community and Citizenship Director, Kym Gardner. “This is a project that has been contemplated for more than a decade, which is apparent in the number of supporters present to celebrate the start of construction.” Kym continued, “We aim to do our part in sharing business opportunity so as we build, we are working to have the Charleston community involved as much as possible.”

Turner Construction is working on the project with associate partner Brownstone Construction Group, a minority-owned, South Carolina-based firm and consultant, McKissack & McKissack. The project is scheduled for completion in 2021.
