Our team in Los Angeles is working hard to cultivate the next generation of construction professionals, often working hand in hand with the ACE Mentor Program on outreach and education efforts. This July, that meant hosting a cohort of high school externs 20 hours a week.
“This was the first year we participated in the ACE extern program, and I was really proud of the students for committing to the program and fully engaging during the process. We gave them a really full experience,” said Brittney Parkinson, Community, and Citizenship Director in Southern California. “It was a busy four weeks, but it was all worth the effort.”
At the end of the program, each student gave a short presentation about their experience, and what they learned. “It was clear from their presentations that our people and our work made a big impression on them,” added Brittney, reflecting broadly on the value of the program. “You might think you know what it’s like to build a skyscraper or an airport or a stadium like SoFi, which the students toured. But there’s not really a substitute for hands-on experience, especially in an industry like ours.”
As far as next summer, Brittney has no doubt that Turner will be teaming up with ACE for another cohort of students. “It was a lot of work to launch, but now that we have a roadmap for success, we are eagerly looking forward to what 2023 will bring.” - Brittney Parkinson, Director, Community & Citizenship
