Investing in our Strong, Smart, and Bold Future

In 2022, Turner Huntsville established a relationship with Girls Inc. while hosting our annual Turner Foundation Charity Gala, Brunch Bid Build. This Gala takes place annually in the fall at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens. This event serves as our primary method to raise funds and distribute them to important nonprofits in our community.

A portion of this event involves hearing from participants who receive services or support from our identified nonprofit partners. Lucky for us, Girls Inc. invited one of their program graduates who are currently in school to become an architect. She spoke to a completely captivated 300-person audience and shared about the impact Girls Inc. and local industry partners, like Turner, have had on her journey. With this moving story, we knew Girls Inc was a perfect partner for our 2023 Women in Construction Week effort.  

Girls Inc. in Huntsville provides programming focused on developing the whole girl. Their services are a combination of long-lasting mentoring relationships and researched-based programming equipping girls to lead fulfilling and productive lives to break the cycle of poverty and become role models in their community.

In short, Girls Inc. inspires ALL girls to be strong, smart, and bold.

In March of 2023, our Turner Huntsville team chose to celebrate Women in Construction Week with Girls Inc. We facilitated a 3-day volunteer campaign where our team took time to build toolboxes with the current participating girls.

These two-hour sessions included a Safety briefing (with full PPE for each girl) hosted by a volunteer Turner Project Executive, a Stretch-and-Flex facilitated by a volunteer Turner project engineer, a guided toolbox build session carried out by many Turner volunteers from all backgrounds, and a wrap-up session where the girls heard two stories from two female leaders at our company. The storytelling piece was by far the most meaningful. This provided an avenue for the girls to learn more about what choices were made in school, outside of school, in college, and beyond to reach the career and goals that our Turner leaders had set out for themselves.

Finally, Turner worked with Girls Inc. to provide a social-emotional learning component as a follow-up to the toolbox build. What good is a toolbox without the proper tools? We provided trinkets that would prompt the girls to think wisely about how they are showing up each day.
