Jack Yates High School

A Beacon for Education in a Growing Urban Community

The school is a focal point of the Third Ward, an area of immense significance to Houston’s African American community. Located in Houston’s Historic Third Ward, the new Yates High School sits between the University of Houston and Texas Southern University. Established as Yates Colored High School, this historic school was just the second African American school in segregated 1926 Houston. Jack Yates High opened its doors with just 17 teachers and their daunting task of educating 600 students. Since then, the school has developed many successful community leaders, educators, entertainers, athletes, business, and civic leaders that have left their mark on this great city.

The 3-story – 208,000 sq. ft. Jack Yates High School includes classrooms, a large auditorium, gymnasium and auxiliary gym with associated locker rooms/showers, weight room, music center, meeting rooms, concessions, kitchen, cafeteria, learning centers and labs.

It was a great privilege to be a part of this project, one that has such a long and treasured history and one that means so much to the community.
