Tennessee State Library and Archives

Preserving Knowledge and Resources for All Tennesseans

The new 253,600-sq. ft. Tennessee State Library and Archives building is a stunning repository for books and public/historic records.

A replacement for the oldest archives building in the U.S.

With a site size of 4.8 acres, the building replaced the oldest archives facility in the nation and includes three stories dedicated to the library and archives, one level of below-grade parking, and a single-story mechanical penthouse. The building has a concrete structure with an exterior composed of a mix of limestone and aluminum-composite panels with a granite base and plaza.

The facility includes a grand reading room with seating for 100 individuals, a library for the blind and physically disabled, dedicated and rotating exhibit space, classroom and teaching spaces, and abundant meeting space. Also included is a conservation laboratory to treat and restore books, photographs, and documents. Additional amenities include a vault for storing photographic negatives, an early literacy center for children with visual disabilities, and a recording lab for production.

Dynamic storage

One of the facility's most significant, high-tech features is the automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS). The ASRS chamber is a climate-controlled room with stainless steel bins and large shelving units to safely store historic books and archival material. It contains three robotic units used to retrieve archival documentation when a code is entered into a computer at a retrieval station.
