Methodist University Hospital Expansion

Turner provided construction management services for the consolidation of Methodist University Hospital’s transplant services into a two-floor outpatient comprehensive transplant institute within the Shorb Tower addition. The hospital’s transplant program—funded by an anonymous gift—is being used for transplant research, with a focus on elevating the patient experience, both of which are critical to driving Methodist University Hospital’s vision.

Designed to accommodate the diverse needs of patients, families, caregivers, and support personnel, technology is folded into every physical aspect of the facility. Inside each patient room, traditional dry-erase marker boards are replaced by smart, touch-screen technology. iPads containing room number, assigned staffing records, and detailed patient information are located at the entrance of each room, maximizing operations through software innovations and state-of-the-art devices.

Maximizing natural lighting was a top priority. While 100% of occupiable space features daylight, the fifth floor boasts an outdoor roof garden with benches, grass, and foliage while the ground-level meditation garden humanizes care by offering a serene respite. The transplant institute offers patients and caregivers a progressive space that positively impacts the healing environment—and improved technology that positions Methodist University Hospital as a destination facility for cancer and transplant care.
