Mid-Atlantic Region Kicks Off New Year with Safety Blitz

Mid-Atlantic Region Kicks Off New Year with Safety Blitz

Turner’s Mid-Atlantic region beat their 2017 recordable injury rate goal, and they finished the year without a Turner recordable injury – both important accomplishments that local Environmental Health & Safety leaders attribute to full engagement with Building L.I.F.E. and the region’s collective Environmental Health & Safety journey.

Now, in the spirit of continuous improvement, they are kicking off the New Year with a 60-day Environmental Health and Safety blitz.

“On the first workday of each week, for the first two months of the year, each active project in the region will hold an all-hands huddle,” said Abdon Friend, director of Environmental Health & Safety for the region. “This will raise awareness of both risks and controls associated with our work activities, and give us a chance to affirm our commitment to active caring and sending everyone home safe from every Turner job every day.”

He also congratulated and thanked everyone who contributed to a safe 2017 as he shared the blitz’s week one message, which focused on how little things can make a big difference when it comes to preventing the most common jobsite injuries including slips, trips, and falls. “In order to help us start of on the right foot in 2018, it’s important that we set some foundational standards and re-calibrate expectations,” he said. “This blitz will give us a chance to connect with every active jobsite.”

One project safety assistant, Lindsey Kahle, was enthusiastic about maintaining the region’s safety momentum. “One great thing I’m seeing is that jobsites are taking the blitz weekly messages and building on them with their own location/jobsite-specific examples and applications,” she said. “Team members are internalizing these messages and making them their own – they aren’t just delivering top-down information. I think that reflects an ever-deeper understanding that we are all responsible for safety no matter who we are or what jobsite we’re on. It’s on every single one of us.”
