Turner Tops Out the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center

August 04, 2020

The team from Turner Construction Company's office in Cleveland celebrated the topping out milestone of the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center in Fairlawn, Ohio. This marked Cleveland’s first COVID-19 compliant topping out ceremony, where the Owner was able to watch from an onsite web-camera. The project team and trade partners wore face coverings and kept a safe physical distance.

The project team was able to celebrate the completion of steel erection in six short weeks due to the utilization of SidePlate connections, while overcoming obstacles amid the pandemic. In an effort to maximize the Owners involvement in topping out activities, the project team conducted beam signing events via a “drive thru” to minimize exposure and maximize opportunity. Despite the constraints, the Crystal Clinic felt as though they were engaged with the celebration, as there were cheers and applause heard throughout their offices, while watching the beam raising from the project web cameras.

“Although construction schedules are demanding, we have embraced our safety culture and always encourage the trade partners to perform field operations in a safe manner,” said Turner Project Safety Manager, Kevin Ott.  “At our daily morning huddles, safety is a topic for each trade’s work activities. In addition, we reinforce the COVID-19 personal hygiene and additional Personal Protective Equipment requirements." Ott continued, "The health and well-being of our workforce is the key factor in the project being able to maintain schedule.”

The Orthopaedic Center is being developed on a 13-acre greenfield site. The facility will include 60 patient beds, 12 operating rooms, supporting clinical departments, urgent Orthopaedic Care Center, space for supportive ancillary and administrative functions, and underground physician parking.

The facility is expected to open mid-2021.
