United Way Worldwide Headquarters receives an Interiors Award of Excellence from ABC

September 15, 2011

Alexandria, VA - At an Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) event, ABC recognized the LEED CI-Gold certified United Way Worldwide, Mary M. Gates Learning Center with an Excellence in Construction Award for Interiors.

Until this gut renovation, The United Way had not undertaken a major capital improvement project since the time of initial construction in 1981. The Gates family had long since been contributors to the United Way, beginning with Mary M. Gates’ local involvement and her eventual appointment to the board of directors. The Gates family matched half the cost of the renovation.

Designed to achieve LEED-CI Gold certification, some green features of the project include white roofing membranes to reduce heat island effect,  solar hot water heat, low-flow and dual-flush toilets to conserve water, low-VOC paints and adhesives, FSC-certified wood, and recycled and regionally sourced materials.

United Way Worldwide Mary M. Gates Learning Center received a LEED-CI Gold certification in 2010.
