Hahne & Co. Redevelopment Project

New residential tower addition & historic renovations to Newark’s first department store originally built in 1901

Hahne & Co. was Newark’s first department store, designed by prominent architect Goldwin Starrett and built in 1901. After Hahne & Co. closed its doors in 1987, the building sat vacant for almost 30 years. Turner teamed with L+M Development Partners to redevelop the site into residences, retail stores, and a community arts space for Rutgers University. This mixed-use, mixed income development includes 510,000 sq. ft., a 9-story, 110,000 sq. ft. residential tower addition and 400,000 sq. ft. of historic renovations. The buildings include 160 apartments, split between the original structure and the nine-story residential tower addition. 64 of the 160 are designated as affordable housing. The two buildings are connected by a shared lobby and atrium. Residences feature high ceilings, stainless steel appliances and a washer and dryer in all units. Amenities in the buildlings include a fitness center, billiards lounge, central courtyard and garden, public and private terraces, 24-hour attended lobbies, and underground private parking with 200 spaces. The project additionally included more than 160,000 sq. ft. of retail, commercial, community, and office space split between the original, 400,000 sq, ft. historic structure and an adjacent, 110,000 sq. ft. tower.
