project at a glance

The Josie Robertson Surgery Center is a 15-story, 180,000 square foot facility that houses three floors dedicated to pediatric intensive care, a total of 12 operating rooms with robotic equipment, laboratories, cafeteria, offices and support spaces. All mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems are built to N+1 standards, creating redundancy for all critical systems.

The building has a steel structure with concrete slabs built on spread footings on rock with drilled mini piles and secant walls to ensure a waterproof foundation. Two curtain wall systems including aluminum and unitized terra-cotta panels make up the building’s exterior wall. Work also included demolition of a four-story commercial building to make way for the Center.

The project’s narrow floor plate and proximity to a major roadway--Manhattan's major East Side highway, FDR Drive--posed logistical challenges, and required additional coordination and accommodations for material deliveries, lane closures, and pedestrian traffic.
