Garfield Senior High School, Jaime Escalante Auditorium and Memorial Plaza

Preserving a School Legacy

After a devastating fire destroyed the original historic 82-year-old auditorium on the campus of Garfield Senior High School (made famous by math teacher Jaime Escalante, who inspired the film "Stand and Deliver"), Turner was selected to construct the new performing arts auditorium building along with a three-story classroom and administration building. The 1,400-seat auditorium features an audio-visual system, broadcast production studio, and large and vibrant images of Mr. Escalante. Key highlights of the auditorium include creative use of glass and metal panels and a mosaic tile mural, whose finishes mirror the historic structure. The structure also includes a Memorial Plaza in honor of Mr. Escalante, preserving his legacy for the entire community.
