The Charlotte Coliseum is a 25,000-seat, multi-purpose arena. At 465,000 square feet, the facility includes 8,000 on grade parking spaces and is located on a 110-acre site. The facility is founded on caissons, with a structural steel frame and a split-face block masonry exterior wall. The roof structure consists of a bridge truss system that is 35-feet deep, spanning 450 feet in the long direction and 260 in the short direction. Turner was instrumental in developing significant value engineering to reduce the cost of the original design by 20% in order to meet the Owner’s budget. The Charlotte Coliseum is home of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets. The facility is also designed to accommodate--through the use of retractable seating—an ice hockey rink. The project was completed through a joint venture with F.N. Thompson..
