This 19-month project began with demolition of the 1923 Yankee Stadium to make way for the new park facility. Ultimately the Heritage Park was substantially completed three months ahead of schedule.

The facility features grass athletic fields for baseball, softball, little league, discus, shot put, and the javelin. The southern ball field is oriented in the same manner as the field that existed at the old Yankee Stadium. A combination of viewing mounds, overlooks, raised planters, bleachers, and seat walls provides visitors and patrons with an array of seating options. The new field-level comfort station includes an adjacent rain garden and play area with water features and play equipment for children of all ages and abilities.

To commemorate certain historical events that took place in the old stadium, 50 plaques have been placed along Ruppert Plaza. It is situated between the elevated and at-grade sections of Macombs Dam Park. The plaza not only connects these two areas via a a sloping expanse of natural grass and two grand staircases, but also provides patrons, fans and visitors utilizing the Metro North Pedestrian Bridge a direct pedestrian connection to Yankee Stadium. Other commemorative items include the rehabilitation and installation of two segments of the original Yankee frieze, the rehabilitation of the “The Bat”, the outlining the original playing field, and the installation of viewfinders that allow visitors a view into the stadium’s past.  In addition to replacing the pavement along the 157th street pedestrian promenade, the existing raised planters were also rehabilitated. The park contains over 300 trees and 6,000 shrubs and perennials.
