The new, 52,000 sq. ft., two-story police headquarters in Lawrence, Kansas is situated on a 29-acre greenfield site. The building provides a consolidated home for the City’s Police Department and support staff, streamlining work efforts, and allowing for more effective collaboration and teamwork. The facility includes a welcoming entry lobby, office spaces for staff and officers, interview rooms, detectives unit, patrol area, break room, locker rooms, evidence storage, sally port, secure parking, and a stand-alone vehicle maintenance/storage building. Functional advantages of the new building include a central entrance and break room for all police staff, expanded and better-divided evidence storage, and a crime lab that allows the department to process some evidence instead of sending it to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. There is also a separate public entrance to the building and a reception area that includes additional rooms to give crime victims further privacy.
