UPMC Hamot, New Patient Tower

A New Tower to Support UPMC Hamot’s Growing Footprint

A new seven-story, 177,000 sq. ft. tower with five floors above ground and two below ground plus a mechanical penthouse. The project included the demolition of the existing professional building before construction could start on the new tower. The new tower construction included two 32 ICU bed units, one located on the 2nd floor and the other on the 3rd floor. There were also partial fit outs of the basement, ground, and first floors – these included spaces for Radiology, Facilities, and several support services. The remaining areas of the building on the 4th and 5th floors were constructed as shell space and were available for future growth of the hospital. Expansion and improvements to the Central Plant included two new chillers, one new boiler, one new generator, four new cooling towers, and an expansion of the oxygen tank farm. Work also included renovations in the main hospital that were required once the ICU’s were relocated into the new tower.
