Greenwich Country Day Middle School

Dynamic and Flexible Learning Space for GCDS

The GA Middle School follows the success of GCDS' Upper School and Performing Arts Center projects. The school combines the campus' original 1890's mansion with a modern addition that creates a dynamic and flexible learning environment. The school includes 19 general classrooms, three specialty classrooms, wood shop, art studio, and a developmental learning classroom arranged along two north-south wings.

Sustainability at GCDS

The project features many sustainable features such as the first ICF (insulated concrete form) exterior wall /structure for a school in Connecticut as well as Electrochromatic [Automatic Darkening] Glass, and an extensive Photovoltaic solar system on the roof. Building on GCDS’ commitment to sustainability, our team achieved energy efficiency by combining a series of high-performance materials, methods, and systems with power production. The building boasts following features:

  • Advanced insulated concrete form (ICF) building envelope and high-efficiency mechanical systems.
  • Electrochromic glass, optimized glazing for natural daylighting, glare control and solar heat gain mitigation.
  • Rooftop Photovoltaic panels to generate electricity.
  • Natural ventilation in classrooms through the use of operable windows and vent fans.
  • Reduced hardscape promoting stormwater management
  • Ultra-low energy consumption with solar energy production to achieve a nearly net-zero facility.
  • Whole-roof solar array with over 13,000 sq. ft. of panels supplying more than 100% of the school's energy needs.
