KBR/Turner Joint Venture Donates Material to the Local Habitat for Humanity

The KBR/Turner Joint Venture, design-builder for the Boeing South Carolina 787 Assembly and Delivery expansion, recently relocated its office from the Boeing expansion project site to Remount Road in North Charleston. With KBR/Turner’s move came an excess of scrap material for which the Boeing project had no use.
“We had piles of treated wood that provided walk-ways for staff in between the construction trailers,” said Kenny Anderson, KBR/Turner Operations Manager. “As a builder, we figured the best use to make of the material was to offer it to a local charity.”
As KBR/Turner staff researched which charity would benefit from the materials, a call to Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore presented an ideal partner.
“We are gearing up for a historical rehab in downtown Charleston,” stated Jennifer Cardenas, Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore Manager. “The wood will help us provide a homeowner a chance to stay in her home with her children.”
Over the course of two days, workers with Habitat for Humanity made several trips to the Boeing South Carolina job-site to pick up the material. ReStore then sold the material for less than the local lumber yards and collected more than $6,500 to go towards the rehab of the downtown home.
“The ReStore is designed to raise funding for Habitat for Humanity,” stated Cardenas. “The donation was a tremendous boost in our fundraising efforts. We know the homeowner will be pleased to know the Boeing project played a role in assisting.”
KBR/Turner reached substantial completion of Boeing’s South Carolina final assembly facility in May 2011, just 18 months after groundbreaking. Project components completed since then include the truck inspection building, the welcome center and the site’s cafeteria. Additional components scheduled for completion this month include the Flightline and Delivery Center.
The KBR Building Group and Turner Construction Company have been partnering on select major projects in the Carolinas for nearly 20 years. This is their 12th major project together.
