Squibb Bridge at Brooklyn Bridge Park Recognized as Best Regional Project – Highway/Bridge Category

Squibb Bridge at Brooklyn Bridge Park Recognized as Best Regional Project – Highway/Bridge Category

Turner Construction Company is pleased to share the Squibb Bridge, in Brooklyn Bridge Park, was recognized as Engineering News-Record’s 2021 Best Regional Project in the Highway/Bridge category.

Led by Brooklyn Bridge Park, Turner Construction Company, ARUP, and E.E. Cruz completed the 7-month project on time and under budget despite the challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The newly revitalized pedestrian bridge provides a direct connection from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade to Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 1. The Turner team carefully removed the bridge situated between a ten-story and six-story occupied building, and above a below grade parking facility. In addition to the surrounding structures, the bridge was positioned in the middle of an active park. The successful execution of this project was attributed to the close collaboration and coordination with DOT, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and various stakeholders to reroute all vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

The function and aesthetic quality of the design was at the forefront of this project. Early in the design process, the avoidance of hollow sections and detailing to avoid water collection were important for maximizing the durability of the steel while allowing all surfaces to be visible for inspection. Tubular stainless-steel railings, with infill mesh panels, and small downlights mounted to the posts complete the understated design aesthetic.

“Overseeing the innovative construction and installation of the Squibb Bridge, which triggered the revitalization of an essential connection point between Brooklyn Bridge Park and the Brooklyn Heights community on behalf of Brooklyn Bridge Park, was an honor.  Throughout the design and construction process, the Turner team worked alongside all stakeholders to dismantle and rebuild a structure that improves both the functionality and appearance of this important gateway,” said Charlie Whitney, Turner's Vice President & General Manager. “I want to thank Brooklyn Bridge Park for the opportunity.”

“Squibb Bridge serves as a critical entryway into Brooklyn Bridge Park, and an important connection from Brooklyn Heights,” said Eric Landau, President of Brooklyn Bridge Park. “We congratulate Turner for being recognized as one of Engineering News-Record’s 2021 Best Regional Projects, and applaud them, along with Gardiner & Theobald and Arup, for their incredible partnership and work on this complex project.”

About Brooklyn Bridge Park
