project at a glance

The City University of New York's (CUNY) East Harlem campus comprises the 149,000 square foot Lois V. and Samuel J. Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College and the 120-bed CUNY Graduate Center Foundation Housing Building. The design and construction teams for the two projects worked together to create efficiencies to save the construction cost.

The school is comprised of classrooms, lecture halls, laboratories, and library stacks, which occupy the lower level of the building with academic departments and offices on upper floors. A landscaped courtyard framed by large expanses of glass further enlivens the lower level. Interior seating areas adjacent to the courtyard offer students and faculty additional gathering areas flooded with daylight and garden views.

A central, landscaped terrace links the school with a CUNY Graduate Center Foundation student and faculty residence building adjacent to the site on 118th Street. The apartment layouts feature a mix of studio, one, two, three, and four bedroom layouts. Ground-floor amenities for residents include a gym, shared community room, and laundry facilities.
