project at a glance

The Arctic Encounter, houses polar bears, Harbor and Grey Seals, and was built in celebration of the Toledo Zoo’s 100th Anniversary. Although three buildings comprise the two-acre complex, water and the creation of a natural outdoor environment were the key components of the exhibit.

The exhibit features: Two 250,000 gallon salt water pools, seven salt water streams; two waterfalls; and a freshwater stream sporadically stocked with fish. The entire exterior exhibit is surrounded by massive simulated rock formations. The Interpretive Building, provides above and below water viewing areas. The non-public spaces house a veterinary clinic, pool and digging area; and a high tech mechanical installation.
