The 105,000 square foot, LEED Platinum Kaiser Permanente Medical Office Building, located on a 8.6 acre landscaped park in Baldwin Hills, California is the newest and largest Kaiser MOB to exemplify two Kaiser experimental Southern California initiatives — Cultivate and Project Re-imagining Ambulatory Design (RAD).
To exemplify the cultivate initiative, this suite of tools and resources leverage both Kaiser Permanente resources and existing community programs to achieve strategic improvements in health outcomes. It is also a real estate development strategy that addresses the social determinants of health, and integrates the community as a key element in KP service delivery infrastructure by investing in depressed communities with new buildings that will upgrade and positively impact those communities. This is grounded in the belief that as community health improves, the traditional healthcare enterprise will benefit from improved health outcomes.
Project RAD is Kaiser’s answer for creating member and community engagement within a vision for a healthcare system known as Life Integration, which shifts the center of care from Kaiser Permanente medical offices into their members’ activities, relationships, and communities. This vision includes the redesign of the ambulatory delivery system by changing the way Kaiser Permanente can meet patients’ needs through building design and enhanced operational workflows.
The Baldwin Hills Medical Office Building was designed and built as a Health Hub, which is a right-sized medical office space and an operating model and environment organized to efficiently accommodate complex care. To achieve this, the processes and the physical environment are designed to add value and efficiency.
