Los Angeles Unified School District - Richard E. Byrd Middle School Sun Valley, California
|

Turner provided general contracting services for this school campus on a 22-acre site. The project consisted of three separate learning communities, totaling 162,000 sq. ft. The structures include three classroom buildings, a gymnasium, multi-purpose room, lunch area and administration building. The design of the radiant panel/displaced air system exceeded the State of California Title 24 by 25 percent and contributed to the total CHPS score of 52 points for the project.
Byrd Middle School utilizes a radiant heat panel system with thermal displacement ventilation. Advantages of this design include:
- Quiet Classrooms: HVAC noise has been greatly reduced by designing ceiling mounted radiant panels utilizing chilled water for cooling requirements.
- Improved Health for Occupants: Freeing the air ventilation from cooling requirements allows a low velocity air supply designed to have less mixing of classroom air.
- Energy Efficient Design: The school anticipated to perform 22 percent better in energy savings than 2005 Title 24 requirements.
- Building Cost Savings with reduced plenum height: Due to reduced HVAC duct requirements, the classroom buildings have a 12-ft. floor to floor height.
In addition, the school has been designed to meet CHPS criteria for Recycled Content Materials and Low-Emitting Materials. Factors that contribute to the energy efficient design include: a central plant, a 3,000,000 gallon chilled water storage tank and a sophisticated energy management system.
Substantial completion on the project was achieved 10 weeks ahead of schedule, allowing the school district and school staff to begin preperations for the upcoming school year earlier than anticipated.
