Philadelphia

The Philadelphia office uses Building Information Modeling as a tool that improves collaboration with architects, and reduces mechanical, electrical and plumbing system conflicts (and other structural conflicts) in the field. The two projects below illustrate some of the ways our staff has used Building Information Modeling

Virtua Health's Voorhees Replacement Hospital
Turner’s jobsite team used the 3D model to coordinate mechanical, electric and plumbing systems for the 690,000 square-foot replacement hospital in Voorhees, New Jersey. Construction involved a 28,000 square-foot central utility plant housed within the building.

Turner’s on-site Building Information Modeling coordinator worked with Hammel, Green and Abrahamson architects, as well as the engineers and subcontractors for 10 months, to supply coordinated designs to incorporate into the master model.

Our project modeling coordinator said,“The ability to review constructability of different systems early in the project was a great help in dealing with requests for information, and with communication with the architect/engineer. Thanks to our use of Building Information Modeling, there were minimal installation conflicts on the job and those that did arise were resolved with the coordinated drawings on record.”

Our team made several presentations to members of the Virtua Board of Directors and other end-users of the facility, who were all extremely impressed with the model and claimed that it will make finding equipment in the hospital much easier and time-efficient. The Virtua project was an overall success because of the detailed and extensive coordination between the trades.

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Colket Translational Research Building
Turner's jobsite team used Building Information Modeling to coordinate the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems in the Phase II tower (built atop the project's Phase I) and to coordinate the construction of the entrance pavilion. The project was nicknamed the 'jewel box' because of its intricacy. Turner's on-site staff worked with subcontractors from 12 different trades to appropriately coordinate areas where work from different trades intersected.
