Cleveland

Positioned in downtown Cleveland within walking distance of hotels and entertainment, the Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center is over one million square-feet. The project is designed to bring buyers and sellers of medical supplies and equipment together in a comprehensive marketplace.

The facility will include showrooms for major manufacturers and service providers, conference spaces and seminar rooms for keynotes and panel discussions, and high-quality exhibition space.

Construction Update

In General

Turner confirms that the project continues in full swing and is running on time and on budget. Our intentions are described below regarding what we hope to achieve this week.

Public Auditorium

The limestone wall stones have been delivered in Cleveland. Turner is awaiting coordination with the work on East Mall drive to begin installation.  Turner previously completed the wall framing in the North vestibule and we are installing the vestibule electric heating and fan powered cooling units and piping. Turner has completed the room for the Mall C transformer, which is scheduled to arrive next week. Turner is working on the exception punch list; four of the 7 items are completed.

Under Lakeside Avenue and Loading Dock

Turner will make the first of two roadway pours by the end of the week. We are installing the rebar for the last pour, which is scheduled for early next week. Masonry will be complete in the First Energy incoming power vault. Work continues building walls that form the separation of the dock area from the convention center areas.

North of Lakeside Avenue

AHU’s (Air Handling Units) have been delivered and are presently being assembled at the East Mezzanine; sprinkler and duct work is scheduled to follow in the days ahead. The Ballroom structural supporting curtain wall tube has been put in place and formwork for the concrete at the base connections is in progress. The west access road to the Ballroom has been poured and underground utilities are continuing. This work will allow final grading and completion of the Ballroom concrete to be completed within the next few weeks. Precast plank, which supports the roof of the BOH (Back of House) corridor, is presently being installed.

Mall C

Installation of the waterproofing membrane above the new Ballroom continues, as weather permits. To date, Turner has installed approximately 75,000 square feet of waterproofing membrane and anticipates 10,000 to 12,000 square feet each week, as weather allows. There is approximately 180,000 square feet in total to install.

East Mall Drive

Placing the crushed limestone base for the new concrete roadway and sidewalks continues. Installation of trench drains, drainage pipe and electrical conduits for the street lighting continues. Turner started installing the granite curbs. This work will continue over the next few weeks and we intend to have all the concrete work completed in March.

South of Lakeside Avenue

Work continues in the East Concourse. At the Exhibit Hall floor level, work in multiple stairways continues on masonry, which will be complete this week, and metal stairs, which see activity in both stairways.  The metal studs have been installed on the Exhibit Hall level thru the center third and will progress into the south (and final) third this week. On the East Concourse level, ductwork, plumbing, HVAC and fire protection piping continues to progress in the middle and second third and is nearing initial completion. This phase includes hangers and piping fully connected and prepped for gauges and insulation). HVAC piping is progressing into the middle third.

On the West Concourse above the loading dock, steel is fully erected and detailing and placing of metal decking is progressing into the middle third. Placing of AHU’s (Air Handling Units), have begun in the mechanical rooms. Sprayed on fireproofing will be completed at the Medical Mart link to the West Concourse this week. Installation of piping and conduit hangers and ductwork supports is also well underway. On the Exhibit Hall Level, masonry continues and is anticipated to be completed by mid-March.

In the Exhibit Hall, steel box truss assembly is continuing.  Six main tree columns in the Exhibit Hall will be erected and the massive “tree limbs” will continue in order to receive the box trusses. Turner has started the box truss erection onto the tree columns. We have also begun the installation of the field trusses. These are 50 foot long sections which span, connect and stabilize the box trusses to one another. This process will continue thru May when the steel erection phase is slated for completion.

Medical Mart

The final structural members in the Atrium soffit as well as the North and South cantilevered showcase wings will be completed this week. Metal decking continues at the roof of the Service Penthouses and in the cantilevered showcase wings. Concrete flooring will be poured at the North half of the Penthouse level. Preparation for concrete will continue and should be poured early next week. Turner will also pour the housekeeping pads next week in anticipation of the placement of mechanical and electrical equipment. The Northwest Stair is now complete with the interior rails thru the Penthouse floor. Work is now in progress installing the Southwest Stair. Adjustments and testing for the construction is in progress. We hope to also have the floor safety gates and paging system installed so we can put the hoist into service by March 1. Work is continuing on erecting the structural support tubes that the precast wall panels will mount to; Turner is happy to report that we are making good progress. We will mobilize another Manitowac crane next week and begin erecting the precast concrete panels on the North Elevation. Progress continues fabricating these panels off site. Thru February 18th, 449 of the 515 panels (82.4 %) have been fabricated. Under floor plumbing and electrical rough-in piping continues in the depressed slab areas on the Entry level. Sprayed on fireproofing will finish on the mezzanine steel from the Main level and will move to Level 1 this week.

W 3rd Street Ramp Construction

Turner is complete with the work in this area with the exception of caulking and sealing the construction joints. The work will be completed in the next few weeks as the weather allows. A revised entry scheme off of West 3rd is pending a final decision regarding changes that are being considered at the Entry Island on W. 3rd Street.
