Turner Construction And Center For Health Design To Host National Conference
Session to Focus on Medical Facility Design for Health, Competitive Edge
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, September 17, 2002 – Turner Construction Co. of Indianapolis and the Center for Health Design will host designers from across the country here on Oct 11 for a conference on healthcare facility design. This executive program, which has been touring the country, explores how designing building environments that promote health and well-being can give healthcare organizations a competitive advantage.
“In this day and age, healthcare executives need to take advantage of every opportunity to stay ahead of their competitors and turn a profit,” says William C. Blank, President of Turner’s Indiana office. “The capital investments they are making to build or renovate facilities must be money well spent. This program is designed to provide healthcare executives and design professionals with the knowledge and information to make the case for how the environment in which care is delivered can make a difference in the performance of the organization.”
“The design can take many forms. For instance, imagine a children’s hospital with spacious rooms to accommodate overnight visits by parents who can cook the child’s favorite foods in a nearby family kitchen. Imagine those rooms equipped with Internet-connected computers and wireless keyboards so the young patients can keep in touch with family and friends. Imagine a hospital lobby with an acrylic tunnel where children can explore a 10-foot-tall aquarium from the inside out. Just imagine.”
The ideas Blank is talking about are more than just that – they’re reality, at hospitals across the country. They were designed embracing the philosophy of evidence-base design; that is; designing the interiors of buildings for the comfort and convenience of the people who use them. This is a particularly important concept in designing healthcare facilities, Blank explained, when patients and their families and friends are often in distress and in unfamiliar surroundings.
Led by Rosalyn Cama, President and Principal Interior Designer of Cama Inc., the two-hour program explores how healthcare facilities can be designed so that they improve the quality of care, attract more patients, help recruit and retain staff, increase donations, lower the cost of care, and enhance operational efficiency and productivity. Pioneers in the healthcare and design industry will present the latest research and exemplary projects.
Wade Lange, President and CEO of Indiana Health Industry Forum, will follow the program as luncheon speaker. Lange will be discussing the Forum’s efforts to solidify Indiana’s position as a leading center of health industry innovation. The Forum is a non-profit industry association whose mission is to create an environment where Indiana is a premiere state for the creation and growth of health industry enterprises
